Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)  is one of the most common hormone disorder of women of reproductive age, affecting nearly 10%.

Because it is a syndrome, there is not one single identifiable cause, but it is often a variety of interactions that result in symptoms.  PCOS is characterized by the presence of two-out-of-the-three of the following: excess androgens/testosterone, irregular menstrual cycles, and the presence of multiple ovarian cysts. Some additional symptoms that often accompany PCOS are diabetes (insulin resistance), weight gain, abnormal hair growth, increased cholesterol and infertility.

Conventional management of PCOS involves oral contraceptives to regulate the menstrual cycle, which may have its own side effects. And if you are trying to achieve pregnancy, oral contraceptive pills are not an option.

At Kansas City Integrative Health, we look at the cause of your syndrome and address each specific aspect of your health to get your reproductive health back on track.  Since no two cases of PCOS are the same, individualized care works best, investigating your specific symptoms, blood work, and diet to determine what may be triggering your condition. Often, this may mean testing into known contributors, such as blood sugar/ diabetes markers, Vitamin D, environmental toxins such as phthalatesBPA, and heavy metals; as well as testing hormones.

There are specific herbal, nutritional, hormonal, and functional interventions that are effective for the treatment and management of polycystic ovarian syndrome. These interventions are focused to regulate cycles, normalize blood sugar, balance hormones, decrease acne or hair growth, and (often) lose weight. We use laboratory tests to monitor the progress to ensure that you get the results you are looking for.
